In order for Louisville to prosper going forward, we will need to create new jobs and opportunity, build and sustain vibrant neighborhoods and communities and have a local government that is open, transparent, effective and efficient. These are ambitious goals, to be sure. But why wouldn't we be ambitious? Why shouldn't we expect the best? We should aim high and dedicate ourselves to pursuing those goals.
Innovation and fresh thinking about how we motivate Louisville's growth and prosperity will help get us where we are going but we must not forget the essential ingredient to bring it all together: leadership.
Vince Lombardi said, "Leaders aren't born, they're made. And they are made just like anything else: through hard work." Leadership isn't just showing up at the office, press events and announcements. Leadership is demonstrated by articulating a vision of where we want to go, rolling up the sleeves to undertake the hard work necessary to get there and inspiring others to join together to achieve more than any one person can achieve alone.
What must we do to move ahead?- Bring energy and vision to the Mayor's Office to grow jobs, improve our neighborhoods and make government work.
- Develop partnerships to bring together public and private resources and vigor toward common goals.
- Work collaboratively with Metro Council to ensure that a wide range of voices and ideas are being presented and considered.
- Have the foresight to know when the "consensus" is right; have the courage to say when the "consensus" is wrong.
The management guru Peter Drucker said, "Leadership isn't about making speeches. Leadership is defined by results."
That's how a Heiner administration will define itself. Results. Accountability. Transparency. Good government under strong leadership at work for our great city.
