Heiner Unveils Jobs Plan

2/1/2010

Today, Hal Heiner released his 12-point plan for jobs and economic development. The report represents the first comprehensive vision statement dedicated exclusively to growing the area’s economy by a candidate for Louisville Mayor.

“As Louisville faces the range of issues presented in this year’s Mayor’s contest,” Hal Heiner stated, “no other issue is more pressing than ‘who will lead Louisville out of this recession and position us to grow jobs?’”

The jobs report provided an overview of Louisville’s economic performance over the past decade and how the city stacked up against its competitor cities – Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville. The data revealed that between 2000-2008, while our competitor cities were creating jobs, Louisville actually lost jobs and had a higher average unemployment rate.

“From arts and parks to one of the largest air cargo hubs in the world, Louisville has plenty to be proud of,” Hal Heiner observed. “With the right leadership this community can once again see significant growth and be a leader in job creation, but it will take a proven job creator to do it.”

In 1998, Hal Heiner developed Commerce Crossing, a business park that brought 4,000 jobs to southern Jefferson County. He followed that with developing commercial sites that currently employ 1,000 Hoosiers and Louisvillians across the river in Jeffersonville.

The Heiner Plan for Jobs and Economic Development 12 point-plan includes:
• Mayor as “Chief Economic Development Officer”
• Establishing a Blue Ribbon Commission to Prepare a New Jobs Strategy
• Creating a “closing fund” to close deals for Louisville
• Establishing a pro-investment culture in Metro Government
• Attracting and Retaining Industry through Strategic Infrastructure Investments
• Establish Urban Coalition to Advocate in Frankfort
• Honing workforce development to train and educate Louisville’s workforce.
• Promoting Small Business and Empower Innovation
• Strengthening Local Vendor Preferences
• New Collaboration with the University of Louisville
• Promoting Tourism and Hospitality: Finish 4th Street
• Open, Transparent and Accountable Government

“Louisville can and must compete. Strong leadership, enhanced commitment and energy in the Mayor's office and new ideas will position the city to make progress,” Hal Heiner stated. “Our best days are ahead of us. Let's join together to move our community forward.”
